ABOUT THE INSTITUTE
The philosophy, the concept of education has changed by now. Today computer-powered design of technologies, machines and equipment becomes the key area of focus in higher engineering education. Such phrases as "computer-aided design and engineering", "virtual production" have come to stay, and are now indispensable concepts of our modern industry. Computer-aided engineering and design help us look ahead into the future, improve manufacture processes and products making them more durable, affordable in price, easily adjustable, more efficient and advanced, having a nice-looking appearance. All the main stages of computer-aided design, from the general concept of a product to its realization in metal, are carried out with the help of state-of-the-art software packages.
Our Institute's students learn to work in the CAD-CAM-CAE environment. Such packages as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Nastran, T-Flex CAD, Polygon, LVM-flow will help our graduates to make nicely designed drawings of the future goods, to accurately calculate their robustness, reliability, safety and other important parameters, and to finally create a technology-intensive and highly competitive product.
At the Institute we train specialists in the disciplines that are absent from the curricula in all other Far-Eastern higher education institutions, among them: metal forming, chemical production machines and equipment, oil&gas processing equipment. The Institute has entered into contracts with several leading companies in the city of Komsomolsk-On-Amur for conducting targeted specialist training program for them. We also have contracts with technical colleges in Komsomolsk-On-Amur and Khabarovsk. Our graduates are in great demand among companies involved in the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects, due to which fact we give the English language a special place in these programs.
The Institute's personnel are 65 lecturers and professors, 15 of them are Doctors of Engineering and 38 have PhD degrees. We can boast 12 educational programs and 700 students, and 4 computing centres equipped with state-of-the-art desktop PCs. Our Institute graduates are highly qualified professionals with first-class skills of computer-aided design and engineering; companies in the city and in the region are always willing to hire them.
HISTORY OF THE INSTITUTE
According to order No. 466 (dated April 5th, 1957) by Mr. V.Yelyutin, Minister of Higher Education of the USSR, the Department of Mechanics was established in Komsomolsk-on-Amur Evening Polytechnic on April 10th, 1957. Two disciplines were assigned to the department: "Machine engineering technologies" and "Metal cutting machines/tools". In 1960/1961 academic year we started teaching full-time engineering students.
In 1966, 50 students of machine engineering technologies and metal cutting machines/tools, and 25 students of foundry industrial machinery and technology were enrolled in the first year of the course.
An important contribution to the development and growth of the Institute/Department was made by its heads/deans, namely: by Nikolay I.Smirnov, Associate Professor at the Department of Machine engineering technologies; by Vyacheslav V.Vassilenko, Associate Professor at the MtTLP, PhD in Engineering; by Emmanuil N.Baru, Associate Professor at the Department of Materials Technology, PhD in Engineering.
With the advent of the "new era" of Perestroika (1990s), the Department underwent a major overhaul. It was at this period of time that new education technologies began to be introduced into Institute. By the end of 1999 two computing centres were set up at the Department, one after the other. In 2000 the University handed over to the Institute 14 desktop PCs and licences for the T-Flex and TechnoPro software packages; the programs were installed at both computing centres, and also at the Departments of Foundry Industrial Machinery/Technology and Machine Engineering Technology. Also a licence for the Polygon software package was purchased.
At the same time new disciplines and subjects were introduced: "Metrology, standardization and certification", "Materials Technology and New Materials Technology". The Departments of the TM and MiTLP started teaching Bachelors of Engineering (2 disciplines) and Masters of Engineering (3 programs).
Since July 1st, 2009, by the order of the Rector of the University (№ 145-О of 30.06.2000), the Machine Engineering Department was transformed into the Institute for Computer-Aided Design of Mechanical Engineering Technologies and Equipment/Machine (Rus.: IKPMTO) within the KnASTU.
